Education Classes

Educator visiting with guestMadison Memorial is proud to be able to provide quality educational opportunities to our community and surrounding areas. These classes are offered by instructors that enjoy the art of teaching.

 

Preparing for Childbirth

Having a new baby is a special time in the life of a family.  Madison Memorial has several classes that help new parents prepare for the birth of their baby.  To register or for more information concerning any of these classes, contact us at (208) 359-6491.

 

Childbirth Class
This all day Saturday class is taught by a Certified International Childbirth Educator and it  includes breathing and relaxation techniques, the labor partner’s role, the process of labor and delivery, medication choices during labor, the post-partum period care of Mom, and newborn care. A tour of the Family Maternity Center at Madison Memorial is also included. 

 

Childbirth One-Night Refresher
If you have already had a baby this course will reacquaint you with the birthing experience.  A one night class includes a review of breathing and relaxation techniques, labor partner role, labor and delivery, information for siblings, and a  tour of the Family Maternity Center. This class is taught by a Certified International Childbirth Educator.

 

Breastfeeding Class
The Breastfeeding Class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultants or Lactation Educator. This one evening class will help educate expectant parents about the art of breastfeeding and its benefits for mom, baby, and dad. Learn how to have a positive experience and get breastfeeding off to a good start with proper latch-on techniques, nursing positions, engorgement prevention, as well as expression and storage of breast milk. 

 

HypnoBirthing®
This five-week course is ideal for those who are looking for a natural approach to childbirth. This class will teach techniques for relaxation and visualization. You will learn how to develop a calm approach to pregnancy that will enable you to work in harmony with your body and your baby and prepare you for a shorter, safer, easier, more comfortable birth for you and your baby. This class can be taken any time after 20 weeks of pregnancy and is taught by a Certified HypnoBirthing® Practitioner who is affiliated with the HypnoBirthing® Institute.   A tour of the Family Maternity Center at Madison Memorial Hospital is also included.

 

First Aid for Children

Madison Memorial offers a first aid for children class that is free to children 9-14 years of age.  In an hour and a half, children are instructed in the following topics: 

 

  • General principles of First Aid and safety when dealing with children of all ages
  • Assessing the problem and knowing when and how to call 911
  • Adult/child choking, infant choking
  • Allergic reactions
  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Bleeding management
  • Mouth and tooth injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Sprains and bruises
  • Burns
  • Eye injuries
  • Bites and stings
  • Poison emergencies

 

An optional first aid book, published by the American Heart Association, can be purchased for each child at the cost of $2.12 if desired. This course is taught by a certified Basic Life Support instructor. Pre-registration is required, so please call 359-6491 to register today!

 

All Life Support (CPR) Courses

All of the CPR courses taught at Madison Memorial are American Heart Association courses. The latest information concerning resuscitation is provided to the participants in each course by instructors who are certified to teach life support. For information concerning dates and times of the courses, please contact Sam Birdsell at 359-6424.

 

CPR (Basic Life Support)

There are several types of CPR courses, each directed to a specific need and group of learners in the community.  Course completion cards are provided and are good for the two years, as recommended by the American Heart Association. CPR and First Aid classes can also be offered in Spanish if needed.  All classes require pre-registration.

 

Friends and Family CPR
Friends and Family CPR is a class designed for families, classes, or other groups who need or want to know the basics of CPR.  Information is provided and practice is encouraged.  There is no course completion card offered at the end of this course.  Times for this class are scheduled according to the needs of the groups.

 

Daycare Provider Class
Those who care for our children in the daycare setting need information concerning safety and action in case of an emergency.  This class is offered on one Saturday a month and will give the daycare worker a course completion card that is required of all daycare workers.

 

Heartsaver CPR
Heartsaver CPR teaches the knowledge and skills of resuscitation in an easy to understand way.  This class is great for those who want to learn and practice the skills of CPR more thoroughly, or who may need a course completion card for their work. 

 

First Aid Class

This American Heart Association class teaches the basics of first aid and is for everyone who is interested in how to respond to emergencies in their families, work environments, and communities.

 

Healthcare Provider CPR (HCP BLS)

This class is designed for those who work in healthcare settings and who need to know the skills of resuscitation when taking care of their patients.  Upon completion of the class a course completion card is provided that satisfies most employers’ requirements for BLS.

 

Advanced Life Support Classes

Advanced Life Support Classes are for healthcare providers who would like or are required to know advanced knowledge and skills in caring for patients in or near to arrest. 

 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

During this course participants are taught assessment and treatment for those in cardiac arrest or who are close to arrest.  Ten core cases are taught, each teaching and building upon the knowledge of the previous case.  A written test and simulated cardiac arrest must be completed in order to pass this course.  An American Heart Association course completion card is provided for completion.

 

Advanced Cardiac Life Support for the Experienced Provider (ACLS EP)

This one-day class offers an innovative way to renew the course completion card for ACLS.  The first part of the class provides ACLS renewal.  Following renewal pre-arrest cases are reviewed bringing new information to those who use ACLS skills frequently, or who have taken the standard ACLS class and wish a chance to learn new information.  An ACLS EP card is issued and fulfills the requirements of an ACLS course completion card.

 

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

PALS is an American Heart Association two-day course for the healthcare provider who works with sick children on a regular basis.  This class teaches assessment knowledge and skills to prevent arrests, and also the skills to manage arrests if they occur.  A PALS course completion card is provided.

 

Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

PEARS is an American Heart Association one-day course for the healthcare provider who does not work with sick children regularly.  Some of the assessment tools of the PALS class are taught and emphasis is placed on quick recognition of a child who is in trouble medically, and obtaining the correct help to prevent arrests.  A PEARS course completion card is provided.

 

Life Support Renewals

HCP BLS, ACLS and PALS can all be renewed through online courses that offer the didactic part of each course as well as the written exam.  Upon completion of the online course a follow up skills test is provided by appointment.  A course completion card is then issued.
